One of my oldest friends, Victoria is definitely a beautiful
person. I met her in Black Voices Gospel
Choir at the University of Virginia. The
first time I remember seeing her, she was leading “Marvelous,” a song that
always makes me think of her. Of course,
I was then quickly confused when she changed clothes and was standing near me,
helping with parts. It took me a few
moments to realize that she had an identical twin who is also musically
gifted. For a while, they were “the
twins,” but as I got to know them, their individual personalities began to be
made clear to me.
Victoria, like her name implies, is quite the victorious
type. She has tenacity and a backbone
that make her stand bold and strong in the face of things that come against
her. In the 8 years that I have known
her, I have seen her face many challenges, especially as the VPMD of Black Voices,
which she handled with a grace and fierceness that made it clear that she was
not backing down and that she would accomplish what she set out to do.
Yet, as much as I admire her strength, it is her care for others
that really makes her a beautiful person.
During my first year, she was like a mother to me. As I grew and our relationship progressed,
she became more like a big sister and mentor in a way. I know that I was among the many people who
looked up to her, admiring her steadfast trust in God and her dedication in
service to God’s people. As fierce as
she was, she was also gentle, caring for people and always taking time to give
and help when she could.
So, happy birthday Victoria.
I love you, and thank you for being beautiful you.
