I love the movie “Avatar,” and so I had to get the soundtrack. Though most of the songs are instrumentals, there is one song in particular that presents a beautiful song of love. The title of the song, “I See You” is significant in the movie, but I’ll talk about that later. For now, let’s get into the lyrics: “Walking through a dream, I see you, a light in darkness breathing hope of new life. Now I live through you and you through me, enchanting. I pray in my heart that this dream never ends.” This first verse introduces the sighting and connection to a new love. It’s as if the singer had a dream in which she saw her love, and now the love has become a reality, and the connection is incomparable. she lives through her love and her love lives through her – intimacy and care at its best.
“I see me through your eyes, breathing new life, flying high. Your love shines the way into paradise, so I offer my life as a sacrifice. I live through your love.” The chorus is beautiful. She sees herself in the eyes of her love, and that is encouraging her to breathe anew and feel like she is flying. The love, like a light, makes clear the path to the beautiful place that is authentic, intimate love. The next line makes me think of the Christian idea of life as a living sacrifice in exchange for the love that God gives to us. In a sense, it’s as if the decision to love is a decision to give your life in a sense. Real love requires giving of self even while maintaining self at the same time. You give of yourself in that you share the feelings and concerns and space of the other person, but in genuine love, such is reciprocated, and you gain the freedom to be more yourself at the same time. In essence, we find life through the love of those we are connected to.
“You teach me how to see all that’s beautiful. My senses touch a world I never pictured. Now I give my hope to you, I surrender. Pray in my heart that this world never ends.” Love has a way of opening our minds and horizons to ideas, thoughts, and feelings we never imagined. Again, while the movie has a much more literal meaning to these lyrics, as the man is being introduced to a world of nature that most (money-driven) humans don’t take the time to see, I think love offers the lenses through which to a similar beauty in life and the world.
“My heart was never open, my spirit never free to the world that you have shown me. But my eyes could not envision all the colors of love and of life evermore.” The safe space of love has a way of bringing about healing and encouraging one’s heart and soul to step out from the protective shell that tends to be formed in the heartbreaking experiences of life. And when we are free to love, we are free to see things that fear would have previously kept us from seeing because it had us hiding from life.
“I see you.” The most important line of the film, “I see you” is more than a visual thing. It means, I recognize you, I validate your existence. For the culture of the Na’vi people, it meant that the person was one of them. As Oprah made clear on the finale of her show, every person alive wants and needs validation, so to know that someone sees me – not just visually but sees my essence and my worth – is a phenomenal thing.
